Riverside High School Summer Reading Requirements
Summer reading is a vital part of the curriculum at Riverside High School. Literacy research suggests that readers who select their own books are more likely to develop an appreciation for literature. Those students not enrolled in an honors level English course will participate in self-selected reading. AR (Accelerated Reader) quizzes are reading comprehension quizzes that are taken on a computer. Each quiz is composed of ten to twenty multiple-choice questions, and students have one and only one opportunity to pass the quiz. RHS will be open and students may take quizzes on Tuesdays and Thursdays in July. Check the RHS website beginning August 20th for days and times that the computer lab will be open for AR testing in August. All quizzes must be taken on the RHS campus. All students MUST have all 25 points by Wednesday September 14th.
All students must acquire 25 Accelerated Reader points through AR quizzes on books read over the summer break. For each increment of 25 points students will be entered in a reward drawing to be conducted the third week of school.
Students enrolled in honors level courses are required to read the following books. The novels are subject to additional test, essay, and/or quiz grades at the English teacher’s discretion. These selections may be used to fulfill all or part of the Accelerated Reader 25 point requirement.
Honors English I
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens 35 AR points
Honors English II
Lord of the Flies by William Golding 9 AR points
Cyrano De Bergerac by Edmond Ronstand 7 AR points
Nectar in a Sieve by Kamala Markandaya 10 AR points
Honors English III
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald 8 AR points
All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy 15 AR points
Honors English IV
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte 23 AR points
1984 by George Orwell 17 AR points
Books may be checked out of the Riverside High School media center, a public library, purchased at bookstores or online. Books can only be checked out on the days that the RHS media center is open for AR. Again, summer reading is a required activity, and we fully expect that students will complete the reading assignment before the first day of school. Summer reading will count as a quiz grade in your English class. Students will also be awarded a certificate redeemable in any course the first semester for a 100 quiz, homework, or classwork grade.
